How Josh Found Relief and Renewal Through Music

At Guitars for Vets, every chord tells a story; not just of music, but of resilience, healing, and renewed hope. Josh’s journey is a powerful example of how learning guitar can become more than a hobby; it can be a lifeline. Before joining G4V, he faced challenges with depression, anxiety, and intrusive thoughts. Today, music helps him find focus, connection, and relief. In his own words, here’s how Guitars for Vets made a difference in his life:

“Participating in the Guitars for Vets program has been instrumental in helping me manage the effects of service-connected depression and anxiety. Prior to my involvement, I frequently battled intrusive thoughts that often led into dark cycles of suicidal ideation. Learning to play the guitar did not eliminate these struggles, but it provided a critical path of healthy distraction—an immediate, tangible outlet to redirect my focus when intrusive thoughts arose.

Through consistent practice and engagement with music, I found a positive way to interrupt harmful mental patterns, allowing moments of relief and emotional reset. Over time, this practice also fostered renewed connections with my family, as sharing music became a new avenue for communication and bonding. Guitars for Vets offered more than just musical instruction; it offered a constructive and meaningful tool that helped me navigate the ongoing challenges of my mental health journey”
